Dr Christopher John Butler MBE was born in England and educated first at University of Edinburgh (BSc) and then Trinity College Dublin (PhD). He started his professional career at Dunsink Observatory (Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies) and the Armagh-Dunsink-Harvard telescope at Boyden Observatory, South Africa before moving to work at Armagh Observatory. John Butler’s research includes Cepheid Variables in the Magellanic Clouds, multiwavelength studies of late type stars, and climate studies relating to activity in the Sun. In addition, he has standardised several of the long meteorological series recorded at Armagh Observatory since 1794. He has also authored several papers on the history of astronomy. He is now an Emeritus Research Fellow at AOP.
