Robert Hogg

Armagh Planetarium and Observatory

(1769 – 1830)

Robert Hogg was the son of Moses Hogg, a Presbyterian Minister of Loughgall (Co. Armagh). Like his father, he matriculated at University of Glasgow (1788), but did not take a degree. After a series of short-term appointments for assistant astronomers at Armagh Observatory, he became one of the longest-serving assistants, maintaining continuity of observations over three decades and as many Directors. He held the position of Assistant Astronomer from 1799 (under J. A. Hamilton) until his death in 1830 (under J. T. R. Robinson), through the years of low funding when W. Davenport was the Director.

He succeeded his father as the Minister of Loughgall (1803–1830), a role he held in parallel with his duties at the Observatory. He was a member of the General Synod of Ulster, and Moderator 1823–24. He was married to Elizabeth McCullagh, daughter of Captain McCullagh of the Clady Volunteers.
