Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Stellar Astrophysics. The successful applicant will work with Professor Simon Jeffery on a programme entitled “helium-rich subluminous stars and connections in stellar evolution”.
The context for this programme is an ongoing spectroscopic survey using the South African Large Telescope (SALT), during which several sub-classes of helium-rich star have been identified, including ‘heavy-metal subdwarfs’. Major goals include modelling the chemical structure of the outer layers of these stars, as well as explaining their evolutionary status and the causes of pulsation stability. Expertise in working with one or more models for hot star atmospheres, stellar evolution and stellar pulsation is essential, whilst knowledge of chemical transport processes is desirable.
Situated in Armagh, Northern Ireland, AOP delivers internationally recognised research in astronomy and related sciences and vibrant educational and outreach programmes for all ages. Research staff work on a range of topics, from the study of our Sun, the Solar System and stars, to distant galaxies. AOP has access to all UK national observing facilities, including ESO, ALMA and ESA, it participates in several international projects such as SALT, GOTO, I-LOFAR and CTA, and has an excellent computing infrastructure including several high-end multi-processor servers.
This is a 3-year fixed-term position funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Applicants should have a strong research record and have or be expected to obtain a PhD in astrophysics by the start date. The position will commence on 1 July 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Salary range will be £28,331 – £35,845 (QUB Grade 6 scale). Starting point will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
