Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Massive Stars. The successful applicant will be responsible for pursuing theoretical research on models for the atmosphere and winds, and the structure and evolution of stripped helium stars and hydrogen-rich very massive stars (VMS).
Objectives include (1) the role of stellar wind mass loss on the evolution of VMS, (2) the associated ionising radiation and stellar feedback of VMS and stripped helium stars.
Situated in Armagh, Northern Ireland, AOP delivers internationally recognised research in astronomy and related sciences and vibrant educational and outreach programmes for all ages. Research staff work on a range of topics, from the study of our Sun and Solar System to distant galaxies, has access to all UK national observing facilities, including ESO, ALMA and ESA, and participate in several international projects such as XSHOOTU, WEAVE, GOTO, I-LOFAR and CTA. This is a 2.5 year fixed-term position (with a possible 6-month extension) which is funded by
the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Applicants should have a strong research record and have or be expected to obtain a PhD in astrophysics by the start date.
Salary range will be £28,331 – £35,845 (QUB Grade 6 scale). Starting point will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
The position will commence on 1 July 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
